Palpitations are unpleasant
sensations of irregular and/or forceful beating of the heart. It should
be noted that some cases of palpitations occur without any explanation.
It can happen to people who have had no diagnosis of heart disease or
abnormal heart rhythms.
Some heart palpitations are
caused by premature contractions. Premature contractions are isolated
heartbeats that occur earlier than they should have. This is followed
by a pause, as the heart electrical system "resets" itself. When this
happens, you may feel a fluttering sensation in your chest.
Symptoms of Heart Palpitations
Symptoms tend to vary from
person to person but they usually have some things in common. There
is usually a feeling of general uneasiness in the chest that may be
accompanies by an irregular pulse. People sometimes report that it feels
like their heart just stopped for a second.
Heart palpitation can even
be associated with a feeling of being 'light headed' or there could
even be a loss of consciousness (fainting). The clinical term for fainting
is Syncope. When this occurs, it is rarely a good sign. Immediate medical
intervention is required in order to determine the cause.
No matter what symptoms you
may experience, it is important to seek help whenever you are suspicious
about your heart. Many people have died because they were leery of calling
for medical help. It is better to be safe than sorry, or dead.
